The power of vertical integration
Beyond the culture of hard work, the company’s strategic edge lies in its vertical integration.
By controlling every step of the production process, Benevento Companies ensures a level of quality that third-party suppliers often struggle to match.
■ Raw material control. Benevento Companies manages the extraction of stone and sand from its own quarries and pits. “We make natural stone outer ledge products, and we size stone for all construction needs,” Allard says.
■ Internal supply chain. These raw materials feed directly into the company’s asphalt and concrete plants.
■ Final product oversight. Controlling the process from start to finish allows them to maintain the highest quality standards for the infrastructure they help build.
“Our biggest success is really just our vertical integration and being able to control the stone we make and the sand we make, and those products then go into our asphalt and concrete,” says Johnny. “We have full control over those products from start to finish.”
“What we produce creates the infrastructure of the country,” Allard adds. “We supply our concrete and asphalt plants, which build our roads, sidewalks, schools, hospitals and libraries. Basically, everything we touch every day has sand and stone in it.”
Growth through stability
Despite a decade of significant expansion, the company has managed to maintain the feel of a small family business. Allard attributes this to a consistent philosophy that has survived three generations of the Benevento family and continues with the fourth generation.
“The philosophy of how the company is run as a family-owned, family-operated relationship business has been the same from day one,” Allard says. “I started here working for John Benevento, Charlie’s father. I then saw the transition to Charlie’s leadership, and now I’m working with my third generation of the Benevento family. Not much has changed over the years, other than the size of the company.”
