Aggregate production was up across the U.S. in the fourth quarter last year, marking the second straight quarterly increase, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Before aggregate production increased 5 percent in the third quarter last year, it had slipped for six consecutive quarters.

While U.S. aggregate production increased in the fourth quarter, USGS says it was up by only 1 percent. The agency estimates 574 million metric tons of construction aggregates were produced in the fourth quarter.

The agency says crushed stone production increased in 25 of the 41 states for which it made estimates. USGS’s production estimates are based on information reported to it in a quarterly sample survey of U.S. aggregate producers.

According to USGS, the top five aggregate-producing states in the fourth quarter were Texas, California, Ohio, Missouri and Florida. The five combined to produce 177 million metric tons.

Additionally, by producing its fourth-quarter estimates, USGS was able to estimate total annual aggregate production for 2025. Aggregate production was down 0.8 percent last year, totaling 2.33 billion metric tons.

In 2024, U.S. producers accounted for 2.35 billion metric tons.

The top five aggregate-producing states in 2025 were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Their combined total annual production was 723 million metric tons – or about 31 percent of the nation’s total.

Crushed stone

USGS produced estimates specific to crushed stone for the fourth quarter and full-year 2025, as well.

Fourth-quarter crushed stone production was up 1 percent to 364 million metric tons, the agency says. For the full year, production was flat at 1.47 billion metric tons.

The top crushed stone producers in the fourth quarter were Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida, which accounted for 129 million metric tons. That tonnage represents 35 percent of the nation’s fourth-quarter total.

Sand and gravel

Whereas crushed stone production was up slightly in the fourth quarter, sand and gravel production was down 0.48 percent to 209 million metric tons.

Production was also down across 2025, dipping 2 percent to 866 million metric tons.

The top five sand and gravel-producing states in the fourth quarter were Texas, California, Minnesota, Arizona and Utah. The five produced 74.9 million metric tons, or 36 percent of the quarterly total.

Portland and blended cement

USGS also published fourth-quarter production totals for portland and blended cement, saying shipments were down 1 percent. Annual consumption of portland and blended cement was down 2 percent in 2025, according to the agency.
