NSSGA issues comments on proposed silica rules

NSSGA filed formal comments with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on the agency’s proposed rule on occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica. OSHA’s proposal is important to aggregates producers because MSHA aims to propose a silica standard for the mining industry later this year, according to NSSGA, which is preparing to respond to MSHA’s proposal at that time. OSHA intends to reduce the workplace limit for airborne silica by half. NSSGA noted in its comments that OSHA's proposal will not improve worker health. Instead, it will cost employers billions of dollars each year and lead to further workforce reductions in some industries. The best scientific evidence indicates that the current exposure limit protects workers from silica-related disease when it is universally complied with and universally enforced, NSSGA says. Since the current limit took effect in 1971, silicosis-related deaths in the United States have dropped by more than 93 percent. NSSGA says its members are committed to providing a safe and healthful work environment for their employees, whose daily… Keep Reading

NSSGA offers mine planning webinar

NSSGA continues its AGG1 Online webinar series with a one-hour event entitled “Mine Planning—Managing Your Geological Resource” that is scheduled to take place Feb. 20. Geologists with decades of experience in the mining and aggregates industries will discuss how the development of a robust geological model for a site forms the basis of an integrated mine plan. Attendees will learn how an informed and integrated mine plan provides many benefits for an operation, including: sustainable management, maximizing geological resources safely throughout the life of the quarry, minimizing the handling and double-handling of overburden and waste rock, and enabling ongoing rehabilitation and restoration of a site to meet environmental and planning permit conditions. The webinar will be based on real-life examples from both crushed stone and sand and gravel quarries, NSSGA says. Attendees may earn one Professional Development Hour for each AGG1 Online webinar they attend. For more information, click here. Keep Reading

Xylem opens Florida dewatering solutions branch

Xylem – a global water technology provider that enables customers to transport, treat, test and efficiently use water in public utility, residential and commercial building services and industrial and agricultural settings -- opened a dewatering solutions branch in Pompano Beach, Fla. The 12,000 sq. ft. facility is equipped with shop and office space, and sits on more than two acres. It will be managed by Mike Sturgill, the company’s current Florida branch manager. "Finding the right building is always a challenge," Sturgill says. "But we knew Southeast Florida required a local presence from us to provide our customers with the service and support they've come to expect from the Godwin brand.” The company says it plans to add sales and support staff. Todd Huffman, Florida regional manager, also will work at the facility along with a salesperson already experienced in the area. “The facility and space available to us now will be invaluable for meeting the requirements of larger projects quickly and efficiently," Huffman says. Dodge Momentum Index continues to climb

The Dodge Momentum Index, a monthly measure of the first report for nonresidential building projects in planning, rose 3 percent in January from the previous month, according to McGraw Hill Construction. The Momentum Index has been on a steady climb for more than a year, with the exception of slight declines in June and October. January’s relatively strong gain brought the Momentum Index to 121.1, compared with a revised 117.6 in December 2013. As the environment for new nonresidential development continues to improve, the planning pipeline of nonresidential building projects has grown more active. The commercial building segment was the driving force behind January’s increase, whereas plans for institutional building held steady with December. Commercial building plans gained 5.7 percent, largely the result of increased planning activity for office and hotel development. The largest commercial projects to enter the planning pipeline in January were all located in California and include a $275 million St. Regis Hotel in Napa, a $200 million Renaissance Hotel at LA Live in Los Angeles and… Keep Reading

SME updates cut-off grade estimation book

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME) says a new edition of a publication that examines cut-off grades, one of the most important calculations in the mining industry because they play a key role in estimating mineral reserves that can be publicly reported, is now available. An Introduction to Cut-off Grade Estimation, second edition, covers topics that include breakeven cut-off grade, capacity constraints and opportunity costs, cut-off grade and mine planning, blending strategy, and the costs that should be included in cut-off grade calculations. “As an internationally recognized expert in the management, estimation, and public reporting of mineral resources, author Jean-Michel Rendu has incorporated practical insights into this best selling publication,” says SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “The completely updated second edition is easier to read and of greater practical interest to professionals the world over.” Cut-off grades are essential to determining the economic feasibility and mine life of a project, according to SME, and the profitability and socioeconomic impact of mining operations are influenced by the… Keep Reading
