Construction picks up in March
New construction starts rose 7 percent in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $521.4 billion, according to McGraw Hill Construction, a division of McGraw Hill Financial. Nonresidential building picked up the pace after its lackluster performance at the outset of this year, whereas nonbuilding construction showed a moderate gain. Meanwhile, residential building slowed as single-family housing remained sluggish. During the first three months of 2014, total construction starts on an unadjusted basis were reported at $107.4 billion, a 2 percent drop compared with the same time last year. “The slow start for construction activity in early 2014 can be attributed to tough winter weather conditions, in combination with the up-and-down pattern that’s frequently been present during the hesitant upturn witnessed over the past two years,” says Robert A. Murray, chief economist for McGraw Hill Construction. “This is particularly true for nonresidential building, which bounced back sharply in March after depressed activity in January and February, alleviating some concern that its recovery may be stalling.” The 2 percent decline… Keep Reading
Wheel loader coolant maintenance
When someone realizes during the summer that the coolant level in a cooling system is low, it may seem to make sense to add a jug of water to top off the system when the correct fluid is not available. In the winter, the opposite approach might be taken by adding a jug or two of antifreeze/coolant (AF/C) concentrate, when freezing is the primary concern. While these apparently common-sense fixes may not scream “bad idea” at the time, they can be detrimental to the health of the entire engine. It is essential to stick to your usual recommended maintenance schedule and practices as winter weather puts strains on your engine. Don’t let summer thinking get you stuck on a winter road. The functions of AF/C are far more complex than simple freeze and overheating protection. The newest technologies in today’s AF/C provide a layered approach to controlling engine temperatures, as well as protecting engine components from premature damage and excessive corrosion. If a cooling system is unable to satisfy the… Keep Reading
How to maximize wheel loader uptime and productivity
Wheel loaders take a pounding. They work in material that wears away the very steel from which they’re built. Wheel loaders lift and carry enormous loads across uneven terrain for hours on end. They fight dust that is determined to go places it shouldn’t. But the burden on wheel loaders is lessened when owners and operators practice proper maintenance. Here are a few considerations to help maximize your wheel loader’s uptime – and ultimately improve productivity and extend service life. Pre- and post-operation check A daily wheel loader walk-around inspection, both before and after operation, is an essential part of the day. Before you begin your day, check all routine daily items associated with fluids and filters. As with your personal health, prevention is the best medicine, and spotting something wrong before you begin work will go a long way to prevent further serious issues. Equally important for quarry and aggregate operations is the need to pay close attention to features of the machine that contribute to safety – both… Keep Reading
Report: Lafarge merger may result in sale of aggregates assets
The merger agreement between Lafarge and Holcim Ltd. may result in even more buying and selling, Bloomberg reports. That’s because the two companies may be forced to dump some of their assets if they want to comply with the government’s antitrust regulations here and abroad. The most likely potential buyers for their aggregates businesses include Vulcan Materials Co., Martin Marietta Materials Inc. and even private-equity companies, say analysts in the news story. Miners’ rights to representation
The signature box on MSHA’s Representative of Miners Designation Form reads as follows: “I certify that I have been designated as representative by at least two miners who work at the mine. A copy of this form has been delivered to the mine operator. ...” Any two miners can pick a safety representative for employees at the mine, and one of the two may be the representative. A copy of the form must be posted and maintained on the mine bulletin board. How can any miner get a buddy and the two of them designate a representative for the whole mine? Mine operators are familiar with requirements for obtaining a mine identification number. Many are not familiar with how miners can designate a representative. This is important because MSHA inspectors have been making a point lately to explain to miners it is a simple matter to designate a representative. Miners’ rights misunderstood If miners want a safety representative from their own ranks, they have every right to avail themselves of… Keep Reading
