Mack Trucks to upgrade Macungie assembly plant
Mack Trucks will invest $26 million to upgrade its cab and vehicle assembly plant in Macungie, Pa. Mack trucks and diesel engines sold in North America are assembled in the United States, the company says. The investment will improve the plant’s efficiency significantly and will help it deliver higher quality trucks to its customers, according to Mack. Sub-assembly and material handling at the plant will be realigned to support the main vehicle assembly lines more efficiently. In addition, new processes will be implemented and new equipment installed to improve the post-production inspection and testing of completed vehicles. The upgrade will also include two new dynamometers that allow completed trucks to run on stationary rollers for additional testing. “This investment speaks to our commitment to operational excellence,” says Roger Johnston, the facility’s vice president and general manager. “Our highly engaged workforce will use these enhancements to take another step in our journey toward truly world-class manufacturing in Macungie.” Keep Reading

The event was the company’s first North America demonstration but it won’t be the last, says Joel Prince, general manager for CDE in North America. “The launch of our M4500 wash plant at ConExpo-Con/Agg was so successful that we wanted to ensure that we were able to maintain the momentum and demonstrate our equipment in action,” he says. “This format is one that CDE has tried and tested across the world with events having taken place in Europe, Latin America, Australia and Russia in recent months. Dodge Momentum Index remains strong in May
The Dodge Momentum Index, which measures the first report for nonresidential building projects being planning, gained 2 percent in May compared with April’s strong figures, says McGraw Hill Construction. The index is on an upswing following the downward trend shown in February and March for which the weather was to blame. The index is now 17.6% higher than a year earlier, with the May index at 125.2 and a strong rebound in April. May’s figures got a boost from a 4.5 percent monthly gain in commercial planning projects, however a 1.3 percent drop in institutional plans tempered the month’s gain. Planning began in May for such large commercial projects as the $500 million Rainier Square Mixed Use tower in Seattle, Wash.; a $200 million commercial warehouse at Goodman Commerce Center in Eastvale, Calif., and a $100 million office building for Overstock.com in Midvale, Utah. Large institutional projects entering the planning stages in May included include a $200 million addition and modernization for Mount Sinai Medical Center in Queens, N.Y., the… Keep Reading
