Xylem relocates North Carolina facility

Water technology company Xylem relocated its Garner, N.C., facility, which features Godwin products and Flygt pumps for mining and construction. The new location has a larger office and shop with more than 10,000 combined sq. ft. It includes a yard for the storage of additional pumps, HDPE pipe, and accessories. Personnel at this location remain the same, as do the telephone number and all cell phone numbers. Because the facility is located midway between the company’s southernmost branches and its New Jersey headquarters, it will serve as a regional hub. The company says the location is ideal for staging equipment in response to severe emergency weather events anywhere on the east coast. "This new facility will allow us to continue to provide the high level of service local customers expect when they call Xylem,” says Dave Donahue, branch manager. “Our continued growth in Garner year after year needs a new space for this continued growth and effort. We look forward to even more efficient customer service that this new facility… Keep Reading

Hillhead attendance up for 2014 show

Organizers of the Hillhead quarry exhibition say more than 17,559 attended this year’s event, which was held June 24-26 at Lafarge Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry in Buxton, England. Event director Jack Berridge said attendance was up from last year’s figures, exhibitor space on the enlarged site layout sold out and the weather was dry and not too hot during the show. “It doesn’t get much better than that,” he said. About 450 equipment manufacturers, contractors and suppliers from the mineral products, construction and recycling industries took part, promoting and demonstrating their latest plants, equipment, materials and services at the event, which is held indoors and out. Hillhead was bigger this year, organizers say, due to a new layout and additional exhibit space inside the Registration Pavilion. In addition, a new working demonstration area near the entrance to the quarry site was added to provide more space there. The dates for Hillhead 2016 will be announced soon, according to the event’s organizers. Photos: Pit and Quarry Magazine Keep Reading

MSHA can take control after mine accidents

Companies subject to OSHA are inspected after accidents, but employers are under no legal obligation to shut down all or part of their operations. In addition, companies are not required to correct conditions unless a citation is issued. And even then, if companies file a legal contest, there will be no legal requirement to abate conditions until the case is resolved. When MSHA responds to an accident, the situation is drastically different. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act empowers the secretary of labor (MSHA) to issue any orders deemed necessary to protect any person. This power is immediate and can be exercised even if the cause of the accident is not yet known. MSHA can order removal of miners, cessation of operations and immediate changes in conditions to which workers may be exposed. Such orders may remain in effect for days, months and occasionally years. A Senate report from the passage of the Mine Safety Act explains why Congress gave such plenary power to MSHA. The unpredictability of accidents… Keep Reading
