Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) hosted its Xploration Forum Sept. 9-14 in Eskilstuna, Sweden. During the event, the company unveiled its LX1 prototype hybrid wheel loader, which has the potential to improve fuel efficiency by up to 50 percent, according to Volvo.
The company performed demonstrations of a prototype autonomous wheel loader and an articulated hauler work in tandem. It also revealed its electric site project, which aims to transform the quarry and aggregate industry by reducing carbon emissions by up to 95 percent and total cost of ownership by up to 25 percent.
“At Volvo CE we are developing technologies connected to electromobility, intelligent machines and total site solutions that will benefit our customers and the environment by contributing to increased machine performance, productivity, efficiency, safety and sustainability,” says Martin Weissburg, member of the Volvo Group executive board and president of Volvo CE. “Our future products and services will play an important part in building a sustainable society.”
The Xploration Forum was designed to address the company’s four key technology challenges, which it calls the “Triple Zero and 10x,” and focuses in on accomplishing zero emissions, zero accidents, zero unplanned stops and 10 times higher efficiency.
“We believe that our clear focus on electromobility, intelligent machines and total site solutions will help us achieve these ambitious goals and pave the way for a sustainable construction industry,” Weissburg adds.
According to Volvo, all of the innovations showcased at the Xploration Forum are ongoing research projects that aren’t commercially available yet.
