An estimated 606 million metric tons of construction aggregate were produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2017, a slight decrease compared with the second quarter of 2016, reports the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
According to USGS, the estimated production for consumption in the first six months of 2017 was 1.02 billion metric tons, which was also a slight decrease compared with that of the first six months of 2016.
The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, include Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio. The states’ combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2017 was 173 million metric tons, a 4 percent decrease compared with the second quarter of 2016. The states’ production represented 28 percent of the U.S. total, USGS adds.
Crushed stone
In addition, an estimated 365 million metric tons of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2017. That’s a slight decrease compared with the second quarter of 2016.
The estimated production for consumption of crushed stone in the first six months of 2017 was 626 million metric tons, USGS reports. However, this too was a slight decrease compared with the same time period in 2016.
The five leading states, also in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. Their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2017 was 117 million metric tons, which represented 32 percent of the U.S. total.
Construction sand and gravel
Finally, the estimated output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2017 was 241 million metric tons. This was a slight decrease compared with the second quarter of 2016, USGS adds.
The estimated production for consumption in the first six months of 2017 was 393 million metric tons, another slight decrease compared with the first six months of 2016.
The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, include California, Texas, Michigan, Minnesota and Arizona. According to USGS, their combined total production for consumption in the second quarter of 2017 was 81.6 million metrics tons, which represented 34 percent of the U.S. total.
