Aggregate volumes continue to trend downward, with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reporting that production fell 4.4 percent in the second quarter of 2025.
This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of decline.
According to USGS, an estimated 624 million metric tons of construction aggregates were produced and shipped for consumption in the U.S. during the second quarter. The top five aggregate-producing states were Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio, with a combined output of 192 million metric tons.
Through the first half of the year, USGS says aggregate production is down 4.9 percent across the nation. Production declined in 32 of the 40 states measured by USGS, which bases its estimates on information collected through a quarterly sample survey of aggregate producers.
Crushed stone
Of the 624 million metric tons of aggregates produced in the second quarter, 385 million metric tons were crushed stone.
That total represents a 5 percent decrease compared with the second quarter of 2024. Through six months of the year, USGS says crushed stone production is down 5.5 percent.
The top five crushed stone-producing states in the second quarter were Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Missouri and Ohio. Their combined production totaled 135 million metric tons.
Sand and gravel
Sand and gravel production was also down in the second quarter, slipping 3.5 percent.
According to USGS, 239 million metric tons of sand and gravel were produced, with California, Texas, Michigan, Arizona and Minnesota representing the top five sand and gravel-producing states. The combined production of the five totaled 88.3 million metric tons.
Portland cement
Additionally, USGS noted in its latest report that portland cement consumption dropped 3.8 percent in the second quarter. Production through the first half of the year, meanwhile, was down 5.3 percent.
