The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the U.S. output of construction aggregates produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter this year to be 455 million metric tons.
That total is down 3.9 percent versus the first quarter of 2023.
The top five aggregate-producing states in the first quarter of 2024 were Texas, Florida, California, Missouri and Ohio. USGS says their combined total production for consumption was 151 million metric tons.
Crushed stone, sand and gravel
Of the 455 million metric tons of aggregates produced in the first quarter this year, USGS says roughly 292 million metric tons were crushed stone. The 292 million metric tons represent a 4.6 percent drop versus the first quarter of 2023.
The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter, meanwhile, was 163 million metric tons. That total is down 2.8 percent versus the first quarter of 2023.
Cement
Additionally, USGS says shipments of portland and blended cement were down 2.7 percent in the first quarter.
USGS makes its estimates based on information reported to the agency on quarterly sample surveys of the U.S. producers of construction aggregates and cement.
