U.S. Senate confirms Acosta as labor secretary

Alexander Acosta, the dean of Florida International University College of Law and a former U.S. attorney, was confirmed as labor secretary, reports The New York Times.

The confirmation of Acosta completes President Trump’s cabinet, The New York Times adds. He was confirmed by a vote of 60-38.

Now that the cabinet is complete, the Senate can proceed with confirmations throughout the Department of Labor, including the head of Mine Safety and Health Administration, says the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA). NSSGA will continue to push for someone with a strong aggregate background to bring a deep understanding of the industry and needed reforms to the agency, the association says.

“[Acosta’s] appreciation for appropriate government action ensures that someone with the knowledge of the issues impacting our industry including the negative impacts and unintended consequences of government regulations is at the helm of the department,” says Mike Johnson, president and CEO of NSSGA.
