The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) will be co-hosting the Diversity in the Minerals, Metals and Materials Professions (DMMM2) Summit with The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). The conference will be held July 25-26 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
The summit will cover strategies for increasing underrepresented minority engagement in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) professions; best practices for building a welcoming and inclusive workplace culture; and factors behind the self-induced “glass ceiling” and supporting new pathways to career fulfillment.
Throughout the summit, attendees will hear from high-level speakers, participate in interactive breakout sessions and gain skills from professional development workshops. According to SME, its members will be featured in presentations and workshops tailored for professionals from industry, government and academia.
SME adds that during the summit, the inaugural TMS Frank Crossley Diversity and TMS Ellen Swallow Richards Diversity awards will be presented. The Frank Crossley Diversity Award recognizes an individual who has overcome personal, professional, educational, cultural or institutional adversity to pursue a career in minerals, metals or materials, while the Ellen Swallow Richards Diversity Award recognizes an individual who has helped or inspired others to overcome adversity.
SME is a society that has more than 15,000 members representing all professions serving the mining, minerals and underground construction industries in more than 100 countries. SME members include engineers, geologists, metallurgists, educators, students and researchers.
