The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) awarded the 2020 Barry K. Wendt Scholarship to Ryan Sibley, a junior at the Missouri University of Science & Technology.

NSSGA’s M&S Division administers an annual scholarship to honor the memory of Barry K. Wendt, a long-time division member who was known for his commitment to family, his community and the aggregate industry, NSSGA says.

The scholarship is given to a college student who plans to start a career within the industry. This year, a panel of judges from the M&S division awarded $2,500 to Sibley.

Sibley, a member of Missouri S&T’s student chapter of NSSGA, is majoring in mining engineering and became interested in the aggregate industry after learning from his brother, also a mining engineer, about today’s mining industries.

“I grew up not knowing much about mining aside from what the media depicted: typically accidents and the hazards associated with the field,” Sibley says.

He learned more about the aggregate industry through his studies and an internship with NSSGA member Vulcan Materials Co.

Sibley plans to build a career in the industry and eventually earn a master’s and doctoral degree. He attended the 2019 AGG1 Academy & Expo and NSSGA’s Annual Convention in Indianapolis through his involvement with his school’s NSSGA student chapter.
