The first day of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) 2017 Annual Convention took place March 3 in Las Vegas.
The opening general session began with a panel discussion between Karen Hubacz Kiley, chair of NSSGA’s small producer subcommittee from Bond Construction Corp., and the NSSGA Governmental Affairs staff. The panel covered how the team helps address challenges that aggregate industry businesses may encounter, including the Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Patterns of Violations rule, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s crystalline silica standard and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Waters of the United States rule.
In addition, NSSGA doled out its safety and excellence awards. The Gallatin Quarry, a Rogers Group Inc. operation, received the Platinum Award of Excellence in Community Relations. Southington Sand and Pit Tilcon Connecticut Inc., Abilene Blacklease Quarry and Dalton Quarry received Safety Excellence awards for demonstrating exemplary safety performance. Finally, Iddings Quarry Inc., Wiregrass Construction Company Inc., and Specialty Granules Inc. received Sterling Safety awards.
In addition to this, Lehigh Hanson’s Randy Mucha was awarded the James M. Christie Award for advocating safety at the company and overseeing more than 550 sites and 9,000 employees.
