The National Mining Association (NMA) named its 2023 Sentinels of Safety award winners.
The Sentinels of Safety award recognizes mineral mining and coal operations in 10 categories for recording the most hours in a calendar year without a single lost-time injury. NMA says a minimum of 4,000 hours is required for award consideration and that its award categories reflect the safety accomplishments of both small and large mines.
Twenty U.S. mining operations – six coal mines and 14 mineral/metal mines – were honored with a Sentinels of Safety award for their performances in 2022.
“Everything that happens in and around a mine happens with a rigorous safety mindset,” says Rich Nolan, president and CEO of NMA. “From the miners on the ground to their managers and beyond, safety is an area that requires constant vigilance.”
Aggregate operations recognized
Among those honored in NMA’s Large Group category was Capital Sand Permian’s Monahans operation. Located in Monahans, Texas, the operation was recognized in the Large Bank or Pit category.
Vulcan Materials Co.’s Briggs Plant received the Sentinels of Safety award in the Large Dredge category. The Briggs Plant is located in Victoria, Texas.
Additionally, Titan America’s Pennsuco Quarry in Medley, Florida, received the Large Quarry award.
Another three operations were recognized in NMA’s Small Group category. Crater Sand & Gravel, Martin Marietta and Robco each had winners in the group.
Receiving the Small Bank or Pit category award was Crater Sand & Gravel’s operation in Central Point, Oregon.
NMA recognized Martin Marietta’s Raccoon River Sand operation in Des Moines, Iowa. The operation received the Small Dredge award.
Also receiving a Small Group award was a Robco portable crushing operation. The Grants Pass, Oregon, operation was recognized as the Small Quarry category winner.
