The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) plans to hold a public hearing July 19 in Salt Lake City, where the agency will address its proposed rule addressing workplace exams in metal and nonmetal mines.
In addition, the hearing will explore MSHA’s information request to approaches that would control and monitor underground miners’ exposure to diesel exhaust. Studies from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health and the National Cancer Institute found a strong link between diesel exhaust and lung cancer, MSHA reports.
According to MSHA, effective workplace exams are a fundamental accident prevention tool that allows mine operators to find and fix adverse conditions and violations of safety and health standards before they cause injury or death to miners.
