According to MSHA, the inspections were conducted at mines in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

The monthly impact inspections began in April 2010 and are conducted at mines that merit increased agency attention and enforcement due to poor compliance history or other compliance concerns. Since then, MSHA inspectors have conducted 1,173 impact inspections and issued 16,429 citations, 1,317 orders and 60 safeguards.
