Limestone trade on Great Lakes dips slightly in July

Limestone shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 3.5 million tons in July, a decrease of less than one percent year over year.

This decrease follows a 6.5 percent increase in June reported by the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA).

According to LCA, July’s total was also below the month’s five-year average by 6.7 percent. Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2.9 million tons, a decrease of one percent compared to a year ago. Shipments from Canadian quarries decreased by less than one percent over the same period to 646,418 tons.

Year-to-date, the Great Lakes limestone trade is down 5 percent to 12.7 million tons compared to the first seven months of 2024. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries were down 3.2 percent to 10.4 million tons. Shipments from Ontario quarries totaled 2.3 million tons, a decrease of 12.6 percent compared to a year earlier.
