Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.8 million tons in October, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports.
The October tonnage is down 2.7 percent from the mark achieved in October 2022, LCA says. Still, October’s limestone cargos are above the month’s five-year average by 6.3 percent.
Loadings from U.S. quarries in October totaled 3 million tons, a decrease of 6.4 percent. Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 835,201 tons, an increase of 13.5 percent.
Through 10 months of the year, the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 23.5 million tons – a decrease of 5.9 percent versus the first 10 months of 2022. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries are down 4.9 percent in that time to 18.9 million tons. Shipments from quarries in Ontario, Canada, total 4.6 million tons for a decrease of 9.9 percent.
