Komatsu agreed to acquire American Battery Solutions (ABS), a battery manufacturer headquartered in Detroit.
Komatsu made the acquisition through Komatsu America Corp., a subsidiary in the U.S. The company expects the deal to close Dec. 1, and ABS will operate as a standalone business entity within Komatsu.
According to Komatsu, ABS manufactures heavy-duty and industrial battery packs using lithium-ion batteries for off-road vehicles, as well as commercial vehicles, transit buses and on-road vehicles. Komatsu expects the acquisition will enable it to produce its own battery-operated construction and mining equipment.
Following the deal, the first equipment produced with ABS’s batteries will be used to power mining equipment in North America and South America. Komatsu also aims to expand the use of batteries in construction equipment and to establish a global supply system.
