The Kentucky Crushed Stone Association presented Mountain Cos. with its 2017 Good Neighbor Award.
Established in 2000, the Good Neighbor Award recognizes aggregate producers and associates whose community involvement and support activities enhanced the public’s perception of the aggregate industry.
Mountain Cos. earned this award through its collaboration with Carter Caves State Park in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Through this project, Mountain Cos. helped the park find a safe canoe and kayak access site for visitors to use when touring the park’s Tygart’s Creek. According to the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association, the original access site used by the state park was located directly off a highway and posted safety issues for everyone involved.
The project included site preparation work, drawing and the placement of more than 150 tons of stone to make the creek entry point easier to reach by the state park buses dropping off kayakers and canoers.
The association also presented its 2016 Safety Milestone Awards to a number of companies.
Brandywine Explosives & Supply Inc., Hinkle Contracting Co. LLC (Barren County Stone) and Rock Drilling Inc. earned awards for five years with no lost-time accidents; Hinkle Contracting (Monroe County Stone), Mountain Aggregates Inc. (Elkhorn Stone) and The Walker Co. (Menifee Stone) earned awards for 10 years with no lost-time accidents; Vulcan Materials (Fort Knox Quarry) earned an award for 15 years with no lost-time accidents; and Orica USA was recognized for 20 years without a lost-time accident.
In addition, the companies recognized for safety records without lost-time injuries in 2016 include Mountain Materials (Carter City Quarry with 348 man hours); Orica USA (with 3,788 man hours); Hinkle Contracting (Allen County Stone with 14,030 man hours; Barren County Stone with 22,768 man hours; and Somerset Stone Co. with 39,084 man hours); Austin Powder Co. (Willisburg Stie Mid-South LLC with 24,158 man hours); Rock Drilling Inc. (with 46,972 man hours); Rogers Group Inc. (Hopkinsville Aggregate with 50,889 man hours; Jefferson County Stone with 83,690 man hours; and Bullitt County Stone with 87,026 man hours); Vulcan Materials (Central Mine with 69,695 man hours); Midland Powder (with 72,530 man hours); Mill Equipment & Mill Supply Co. (with 132,831 man hours); and Pine Bluff Sand & Gravel Co. (Cumberland River Quarry with 206,071 man hours).
