About the Pit & Quarry University Handbook

The Pit & Quarry University Handbook is designed to provide an overview of the aggregates mining process and the business of running a crushed-stone quarry or sand-and-gravel operation. From the dawn of the original P&Q Handbook in 1907, to its digitization in the form of P&Q University in 1998 – 2000, Pit & Quarry continues its commitment to informing aggregates professionals at all stages and across all mediums.

History of the Pit & Quarry Handbook

The first Handbook was published in 1907 as a textbook-style resource guide, a full nine years before the launch of Pit & Quarry Magazine. Updated editions of the Pit & Quarry Handbook continued to roll out in the following decades, copies of the publication making their way into the hands both seasoned aggregates professionals as well as universities with mine-engineering curriculums. It has since become a source for basic industry information that has helped industry managers, new hires, students and others learn about the business of producing aggregates for roadbuilding, construction and other end uses.

Evolution into Pit & Quarry University

The Pit & Quarry Handbook made its long-awaited digital debut when all 14 lessons of the latest edition were made available online under the new educational umbrella of Pit & Quarry University. This online resource now serves as an educational hub, providing industry professionals and interested learners with comprehensive insights into quarrying and aggregate production techniques.

We would like to thank the dozens of companies, agencies, associations and individuals who contributed their time, resources, information, photos and more. And a special thank you goes out to our offical Handbook sponsor, Kleemann, and the other advertisers who have made this edition of the Handbook possible.

A team of editors with decades of industry experience helped to put this all together, and I offer thanks to them, as well as the Pit & Quarry team for taking on this large project.
