
The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) made available a new safety library publication (SLP) for use by the commercial explosives industry.
The new publication, titled SLP-33: Guide to Explosives & Blasting Agents, addresses safety in the manufacturing of explosives and blasting agents. The publication also addresses elements of process safety management that are directly relevant to explosives manufacturing, storage and use.
“At IME, safety is the cornerstone of who we are and everything we do,” says Clark Mica, IME president. “This addition to our suite of safety library publications is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative and up-to-date safety practices, training programs and equipment standards that keep our workforce and the communities in which we operate safe.”
The mission of IME is promote the safe and secure manufacture, transport, distribution and use of commercial explosives.The organization was founded in 1913 for the purposes of providing technically accurate information and recommendations concerning the safety of commercial explosives.
In 1914, IME published its first SLP governing the construction of storage magazines. Since then, IME has developed and published a suite of best practices and guidelines to ensure safety and security in the manufacture, transport, storage, distribution, use and disposal of commercial explosives.
IME’s SLPs have been incorporated into federal, state and local regulations governing safety and security.
