Great Lakes limestone trade up in 2018

Logo: Lake Carriers AssociationShipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 28.4 million tons in 2018, a 1.3 percent increase compared with 2017, reports the Lake Carriers’ Association. In addition, 2018 loadings were 2.8 percent above the trade’s five-year average.

Loadings from U.S. quarries in 2018 totaled 23.45 million tons, a 1.2 percent increase compared with 2017. Shipments from U.S. quarries also topped their five-year average by a like percent, the Lake Carriers’ Association adds.

Also, shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 4.9 million tons, a 1.7 percent increase compared with 2017. This number is 10.8 percent higher than the five-year average of Canadian quarry shipments.

The Lake Carriers’ Association represents 13 American companies that operate 45 U.S.-flag vessels on the Great Lakes and carry the raw materials, including iron ore, flux stone, aggregate, cement, coal, sand and grain.
