Great Lakes limestone trade improves in 2017

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 28 million tons in 2017, which is a 6.4 percent increase compared with 2016, reports the Lake Carriers’ Association.

In addition, loadings in 2017 were 2.1 percent above the trade’s five-year average.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 23.2 million tons, an 8.4 percent increase compared with 2016. Shipments from U.S. quarries also rose above the five-year average.

Loadings from Canadian quarries totaled 4.85 million tons, a decrease of 2.1 percent compared with 2016. Despite the decrease, shipments from Canadian quarries were 10.4 percent above the five-year average.

The Lake Carriers’ Association represents the U.S.-flag Great Lakes fleet, which moves millions of tons of cargo used for manufacturing, power generation and construction.
