
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.7 million tons in August, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports.
LCA says the 3.7 million-ton total is down 7.7 percent from the August 2023 output. The August 2024 mark is down 4.4 percent from the month’s five-year average.
According to LCA, loadings in August from U.S. quarries totaled 2.9 million tons – a decrease of 11.1 percent versus August 2023. Shipments from Canadian quarries were up 7.3 percent this August to 809,032 tons.
Through eight months of the year, LCA says the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 17.1 million tons. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries are at 13.6 million tons, while shipments from Ontario quarries are at 3.4 million tons. The trade overall is trending slightly above last year’s performance.
