Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.1 million tons in June, a decrease of 17.6 percent from a year ago.
The Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports that this June’s loadings were below the month’s five-year average by 17.4 percent.
June loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2.5 million tons, a decrease of 15.2 percent compared to June 2022. Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 610,702 tons, marking a 26.4 percent decrease.
On the year, LCA says the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at nearly 8.1 million tons. Shipments are down 16.9 percent compared to the first half of 2022.
First-half 2023 loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries were down 15.8 percent from a year ago while shipments from Ontario quarries were down 21.2 percent.
