Good growth in 2024 for Great Lakes limestone cargos

The Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports that limestone shipments on the Great Lakes in June totaled 3.3 million tons, an increase of 6 percent from a year ago.

This June’s loadings were below June’s five-year average by 7.7 percent, LCA says.

June 2024 loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2.6 million tons, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to June 2023. Shipments from Canadian quarries this June totaled 738,606 tons, an increase of 20.9 percent versus last June.

Through half of 2024, LCA says Great Lakes limestone shipments are at about 9.8 million tons. That total is up 21.2 percent compared to the first six months of 2023.

Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries are up by 21.5 percent through half of the year. Shipments from Ontario quarries are at 1.9 million tons through six months for an increase of 20.3 percent.
