Freehaven Materials showcased its new waste recycling plant this spring during an open house at its operation in Brookhaven, New York.

More than 160 guests toured the 150-tph CDE plant, which repurposes excavated waste material into in-spec sand and aggregates.

According to CDE, most of the sand produced at the facility is used in New York City for concrete production, while many of the aggregates will support major infrastructure projects.

“Across Long Island we’re seeing more landfill sites close, which was limiting the options for how we got rid of this material,” says Tom Hayes, managing partner at Freehaven Materials. “And that’s where CDE came along. We seized the opportunity to transform dirt into dollars, not only giving us competitive advantage for full-scope heavy-civil projects, but, in turn, contributing to the circular economy and preserving natural resources.”

CDE says the New York State Senate is currently considering a bill requiring contractors in certain large cities to recycle 50 percent of the waste generated on construction and demolition sites.

“With increased demand for sand and aggregates across the region, mixed with high disposal costs and virgin material scarcity, Freehaven Materials realized the value in transforming this C&D waste into resource,” says Joe Teahl, business development manager at CDE. “With this sustainable solution, Freehaven Materials is recycling products, without compromising on quality, creating material which is vital for local construction projects,” Teahl adds. “By investing in CDE, they’ve invested in the future.”
