The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) revealed the recipients of its Environmental Excellence Awards, which include Cemex’s FEC Quarry as the Platinum Award Winner.

NSSGA named 9 Gold Award winners, 10 Silvers and 99 Bronze environmental award recipients during the first general session of its Legislative & Policy Forum in Washington.

According to NSSGA, its Excellence Awards recognize operations that demonstrate a commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems.

“NSSGA members take pride in responsible stewardship of the land, air and water,” says Michael Johnson, president and CEO of NSSGA. “Every winner deserves congratulations for their role in advancing the industry’s commitment to our environment.”

The Gold Award winners in NSSGA’s Environmental Excellence program include three Cemex operations (Center Hill Quarry; FEC Quarry; Lake Wales Sand Mine) and three Martin Marietta sites (Ames Mine; Burlington Quarry; Midlothian Quarry).

Cemex’s FEC Quarry received the Platinum Award as the top-scoring Gold Award winner in the program.

Other Gold Award recipients are Granite Construction Co.’s Bee Rock Quarry, Posillico Materials’ Posillico Wash Plant and Barrett Paving Materials’ Watertown Quarry.

A complete listing of the 2024 Award winners can be found at nssga.org/awards.

Additionally, NSSGA awarded John Richards of Air Control Techniques with its 2024 Environmental Leadership Award.

Richards founded Air Control Techniques in 1993 after 20 years in engineering and air pollution control. The NSSGA award recognizes his decades-long work to keep the industry out of onerous and expensive Title V permits, as well as his more recent efforts using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data to demonstrate the wide-ranging impacts of a reduced PM 10 standard.

The association says Richards’ work for NSSGA members has saved the aggregate industry substantial resources and provided the technical context for many NSSGA policy positions.
