Caterpillar released the 980 GC wheel loader as a solution for a broad range of applications.
The new wheel loader offers low fuel consumption, load-sensing hydraulics, intuitive controls and Performance Series buckets.
“We’ve built the new 980 GC on a long legacy of high-performance and highly reliable wheel loaders with proven components and integrated Cat machine systems,” says Frank Stadelmann, global product application specialist at Cat. “The loader’s simple user interface, intuitive controls and excellent visibility make for comfortable and efficient operation, even with less experienced operators. New features to this model, like our Engine Idle Management System (EIMS), minimize idle RPM and fuel consumption to help deliver low owning and operating costs.”
Efficiency in action
The new 980 GC, the latest addition to Cat’s line of medium wheel loaders, is powered by a Cat C13 engine. According to the company, the engine’s Cat Clean Emissions Module works in the background without impacting production. Additionally, Cat says its EIMS, auto engine idle shutdown, variable speed fan and load sensing hydraulics combine to offer low fuel consumption and sound levels on the machine.
The loader features an automatic planetary powershift transmission, delivering high reliability and long service life, the company says. It can reach a maximum speed of 24.7 mph and available ride control improves operating smoothness over rough terrain. Optional limited slip differential axles also increase traction in poor underfoot conditions.
With a bucket capacity range of 5.75 to 7.5 cu. yd., Cat says its Performance Series buckets balance bucket shape with the machine’s lift and tilt capacity, weight and linkage. The bucket design improves material retention and reduces dig time with build options that include general purpose, flat floor, heavy duty rock, coal and light material to meet any application.
Digging efficiency is enhanced thanks to the Cat Z-bar loader linkage, featuring a cast crossmember and tilt lever. The 980 GC can be equipped with the Cat Fusion quick coupler and controls. When combined with third-function hydraulics, the couple allows the use of a variety of work tools, according to Cat.
Standard for the new wheel loader is Cat VisionLink, which allows fleet managers to track loader operating parameters such as machine location, hours, fuel usage, diagnostic codes and idle time. This, in turn, can offer improved productivity and lower operating costs, the company says.
Also available as an option, Cat Payload weighs material while moving to the truck and lifting for on-the-go weighing (not legal for trade). This helps the operator load to specification, load more trucks and avoid over- or under-loading, Cat says. The Cat Payload for Trade option is available to operators in Europe, and allows them to integrate the scale data directly into business processes.
Comfortable operation
The 980 GC’s cab features a spacious design that offers easy, intuitive controls and excellent visibility, according to Cat. The user interface is designed as an intuitive system, the company says, allowing operators to monitor machine health.
Ladders are standard on both sides of the loader, providing access to the cab from the left-hand side and service points from the right-hand side. Visibility is heightened with a wide, flat and distortion-free front windshield, rearview mirrors and spot mirrors. The loader also comes standard with a rearview camera.
