Rep. Martha McSally, R-Arizona, visited a CalPortland cement plant and its Twin Peaks aggregate plant in Rillito, Arizona.
“Having our members of Congress tour our operations shows them the importance of quarries and aggregates to our infrastructure and construction industries,” says Steven Regis, CalPortland senior vice president of corporate services. “We were able to have good conversations about the overwhelming number of regulations facing our industry and the need to revitalize the economy, both nationwide and here in Arizona.”
During the visit, the staff and McSally discussed specific issues with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rule on permissible exposure limit for crystalline silica, regional haze and air quality. The staff also educated McSally on the history of the Mine Safety & Health Administration and how the agency regulates safety across the country.
Earlier this year, Rep. Paul Cook, R-California, toured a CalPortland plant in Oro Grande, California. During that meeting, 10 members of Cook’s staff went through the aggregate and specialty mineral operations and the cement plant, Regis says.
