GE introduces the Digital Mine to boost efficiency

One of the trends emerging at MINExpo International 2016 is the use of technology to acquire data from equipment and processes at mine sites and analyzing that data to increase efficiencies. Today at the show, GE Mining, a division of GE Transportation, unveiled the Digital Mine, a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. Each mine, says the company, is a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine, allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations. Powered by GE’s Predix, a cloud-based operating platform built exclusively for industry, the Digital Mine delivers interconnected technology needed to achieve breakthrough levels of efficiency and maximum performance. It combines machine sensors, connectivity, data capture, visualization and analytics to support management of an asset’s lifecycle. “Mining, as an industry, faces strong headwinds and must drive productivity and improve operational savings. Digital Mine, through advanced sensor technology and analytics, seizes the industry’s untapped data to help make a difference,” said… Keep Reading

Ohio memorial part of History’s 9/11 documentary

Eight years ago, organizers of the Westerville (Ohio) Fire Fighters' Memorial project learned they would receive World Trade Center steel from New York City to use as part of their memorial park dedicated to first responders. Pat Jacomet, executive director of the
Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association (OAIMA) says his organization and several of its members, in particular Olen Corp and Belden Brick, contributed time, money and materials to the building of the memorial. We have now learned that Thomas Ullom, founder of the Westerville Fire Fighters' Memorial, was interviewed in New York for History's two-hour documentary titled "15 Septembers Later." The piece premiered Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5, 9 p.m. Eastern, and will also air at later dates. The documentary examines 9/11 through the lens of the past 15 years. It features interviews with key political figures, as well as media personalities Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather. In addition to the Ullom interview, History videographers came to Westerville to shoot video at the memorial park. OAIMA and its… Keep Reading

Virtually here

Some of you baby boomers and Gen Xers might recall your teenage years, drivers ed class, behind the wheel of a vehicle simulator. I use the word “simulator” loosely, as it was more like sitting behind a toy steering wheel and watching a really bad film reel. Vehicle simulators have changed a lot since those days, and in recent years that change is accelerating. With state-of-the-art technology from a variety of companies, simulators create a realistic training experience for heavy-equipment operators in the construction and mining industries. A new wheel loader simulation system from Simformotion LLC is set in a quarry environment, and features a three-monitor configuration, simulating visibility in all directions. The addition of a motion system enhances the experience, because the operator feels vibration and movement as the simulated loader interacts with the quarry terrain. And using a simulator is not just about optimizing operator training. Volvo Construction Equipment says it is also about caring for the environment, and about safety and health at work. “By helping to… Keep Reading
