House, Senate to conference on new highway bill
Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an additional 90-day extension of the surface transportation program (from June 30 to Sept. 30) at level funding, setting the stage for a conference with the Senate on a multi-year surface transportation reauthorization bill. Reported by the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), the extension includes a Keystone XL pipeline approval provision and the RESTORE Act that would distribute money to Gulf Coast states affected by the BP oil spill. Three amendments were added, including one offered by Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wis.) that encompasses several environmental streamlining overhaul provisions. The other two amendments deal with Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund spending and coal ash regulation. NSSGA says this is a “shell” bill designed by House leadership to get the House to conference with the Senate on reauthorization and complete work on a final bill that can be signed by the president by June 30. House Republicans hope to force senators to attach the Keystone XL pipeline language to the Senate’s bill, while the… Keep Reading

Construction equipment sales grew 25 percent in 2011
Sales of construction equipment by the world’s 50 largest manufacturers grew 25 percent last year to US$182 billion, according to the annual Yellow Table survey by KHL Group. This was a record for the industry, surpassing the previous high of US$168 billion, set in 2008, prior to the global financial crisis. The Yellow Table, which is a ranking of the world’s 50 largest construction equipment manufacturers, saw relatively few changes at the top of the table, with the industry’s long-standing no. 1 and no. 2, U.S.-based Caterpillar and Japan’s Komatsu, continuing to hold the positions they have had for well over a decade. Climbers inside the top 10 include Sweden’s Volvo Construction Equipment, U.S.-based Terex and John Deere, and China’s Sany and Zoomlion. These gains came at the expense of Hitachi Construction Machinery (although its revenues were within 0.5 percent of Volvo, the company directly above it) and South Korean Doosan Infracore. China-based XCMG fell out of the top 10, having sat in 10th place for two years. Across the… Keep Reading
