Summit Materials appoints new director
Summit Materials’ board of directors named Anne Wade, who also serves on its audit committee, as its new independent director. Wade has more than 20 years of financial experience in infrastructure sectors, including the global building materials and construction industries. “We are pleased to welcome [Wade] to our board of directors,” says Tom Hill, CEO of Summit. “She brings a tremendous amount of industry expertise and financial acumen, having served on multiple boards and invested in numerous construction-related companies. Terex Washing Systems, dealer to host California event
Terex Washing Systems and Powerscreen California & Hawaii will host an open event March 17 in conjunction with Powerscreen and Terex Environmental Equipment in Napa Valley, Calif. Caterpillar names new group president
Caterpillar named Denise Johnson as group president of Resources Industries. The appointment follows the retirement of Group President Ed Rapp. Johnson currently serves as vice president with responsibility for Cat's Material Handling & Underground Division. Johnson joined Caterpillar in 2011 as general manager of the company’s specialty products business unit. In this position, she was responsible for nearly 20 facilities around the world. She also served as vice president of the company’s Diversified Products Division with responsibility for the forestry, paving and on-highway truck industries. Following this position, Johnson was the vice president of the Integrated Manufacturing Operations Division. “Denise leads one of the largest and most complex businesses in the company," says Doug Oberhelman, Cat chairman and CEO. SME 2016 Annual Conference to focus on data-driven information
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s (SME) announced its 2016 Annual Conference will be held Feb. 21-24 in Phoenix. The theme of the event is “The Future for Mining in a Data-Driven World.” According to SME, the conference will focus on how the mining industry must prepare for technological advances, new legislation, market trends and economic changes using the data available from a number of sources. Successful companies will be those that learn and implement best practices by better understanding what their data tells them, says SME. Some courses and issues addressed during the event include simulation of mining systems, mine waste characterization, copper heap leach, gold processing practices and geostatistical mineral resource estimation. Bipartisan House vote disapproves EPA’s waters rule
The U.S. House of Representatives denounced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule through S.J.Res 22, which passed 253 to 166. The rule would expand EPA jurisdiction over U.S. waters considerably. This Congressional Review Act resolution will now go to the White House and must be signed by President Barack Obama. According to the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), President Obama has stated numerous times that he would veto any resolution of disapproval. “We are very pleased to see both the House and the Senate go on the record in opposition to the WOTUS rule,” says Pam Whitted, NSSGA senior vice president of government and regulatory affairs. “NSSGA is disappointed that the President will veto this bipartisan statement from Congress, but we will continue to work through litigation to halt this rule.” The House considered the same resolution, which was originally proposed by Sen. Pit & Quarry's 2016 Hall of Fame class includes Rick Feltes of Feltes Sand & Gravel Co., Don James of Vulcan Materials Co. and Steve Zelnak of Martin Marietta Materials Inc. This group joins the 17 current members of the Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame. The new inductees will also be represented in the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum in Leadville, Colo., joining the other Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame members already represented. The inductees will be honored at a black-tie induction ceremony and dinner at 7 p.m. on March 20. ContiTech Iowa plant to expand in 2016
ContiTech’s Mount Pleasant, Iowa-based industrial hose plant will undergo a $7.2 million expansion in 2016. The company made the decision to expand the plant in response to increasing demand for industrial hoses in the NAFTA region. “We have plans to add 30,000 sq. ft. to our plant, and that includes an additional production line, which will increase our total floor area and our capacity by 20 percent,” says Rick Anderson, plant manager for ContiTech. “We anticipate that the expansion will enable us to add about 12 to 14 workers.” According to ContiTech, the plant currently employs slightly more than 200 workers. Superior launches technology to assist in plant installation
Superior Industries launched a new technology, Level Assist, which automatically levels a plant once the machinery is raised to a desired height. To use the new technology, an operator must hydraulically lift the machine to a desired height, then engage the Level Assist by switching the control panel from manual to auto mode. The new feature speeds up portable plant installation, reduces the labor force required for setup and saves money for operators, says the company. According to Superior, Level Assist technology is an available option for new equipment or it can be retrofitted to existing portable crushing, screening and washing plants. Keep Reading
MDU Resources names chief information officer
MDU Resources Group named Peggy Link as its chief information officer. In this role, Link will oversee information technology at the company, as well as its business units WBI Energy and the utility group, which includes Cascade Natural Gas Corp., Great Plains Natural Gas Co., Intermountain Gas Co. and Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. "Peggy has extensive knowledge in the information technology arena,” says David Goodin, president and CEO of MDU Resources. “She brings more than 25 years of experience to her new role, which will serve the corporation well. A key strength Peggy brings to the role are her people and project management capabilities, which are so important in the information technology function of any business."
