Senate passes FAA reauthorization bill

The U.S. Senate passed a $33 billion reauthorization bill that funds the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 18 months, reports the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA). The bill, passed on a vote of 95-3, funds the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) at $3.5 billion, an increase over the current $3.3 billion level, which will provide funding for improvements to runways, aprons and other uses of aggregates, NSSGA adds. Prior to its passage, nearly 20 amendments were added to the bill, including provisions to increase security at airports after the Brussels attack. According to NSSGA, Senate Commerce and Transportation Committee Chairman John Thune says that he was hopeful that Senate action would prompt the U.S. House of Representatives to pass a reauthorization bill before the current extension expires. NSSGA also supports the passage of the bill before the extension expires. “The Senate passed an FAA reauthorization with an increase in the AIP program that we requested," says Pam Whitted, NSSGA senior vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) opened a new nine-story headquarters on its corporate campus in North Portland, Ore. The entire project cost DTNA $150 million, the company reports. The new headquarters serves two distinct functions: to merge DTNA employees currently located in separate offices and to accommodate new positions. According to DTNA, it placed a priority on creating an environmentally-friendly plan with the goal to achieve LEED Platinum Certification – something the company believes it will receive later this year. "With the new headquarters building, Daimler achieved what only one percent of office buildings nationwide can claim: the design energy efficiency is sky high with an Energy Star score of 99 out of 100,” says Nicole Isle, chief sustainability strategist at Glumac, a sustainable design engineering firm. "The new Daimler building is targeting LEED Platinum Certification, a rigorous green building goal that Daimler was committed to from the start. It's a rare achievement, with only two corporate headquarters buildings in Portland having achieved Platinum Certification.” Other improvements to the company’s… Keep Reading
