Superior hires crushing product manager
Superior Industries named Mike Schultz as product manager for its crushing equipment product solutions. Schultz has two decades of experience in the construction aggregates and metal mining industries. Prior to this, he worked as market area director for Terex Minerals Processing Systems (Terex MPS), where he was responsible for sales, service, marketing, dealers and warranties. Schultz also served Terex MPS as crusher product manager, operations manager, international market development and technical services manager. Before Terex MPS, Shultz worked at Raring Corp. in Vancouver, Wash. “Mike is a welcome addition to our growing team at Superior and his 20 years of technical experience will be a tremendous resource for our customers,” says John Garrison, Superior’s crushing and screening product director. Wisconsin Kenworth holds ceremony for new facility
Wisconsin Kenworth, a subsidiary of CSM Companies in Madison, Wis., hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility in Windsor, Wis. The company reports the 75,700-sq.-ft. building will include a number of new technologies, including bays designed to provide rapid-assessment diagnostic services and specially equipped areas to service compressed natural gas power units. A number of individuals attended the event, including long-time employees Dan Haas and Duane Olson, as well as executives from CSM and board members from the town of Windsor. “This new state-of-the-art facility will ensure that we are able to meet the technological demands of an evolving industry and allow our dedicated employees to continue to deliver Kenworth quality service to new and existing customers,” says Jim Moeller, CEO of CSM. According to Kenworth, construction of the new facility is expected to be completed during summer 2016. Additionally, the facility is expected to bring approximately 30 new jobs to the Madison area. NSSGA to host webinar on mine emergency situations
The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) will be hosting an AGG1 webinar, “You’ve Called 911, Now What?” Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. ET. According to NSSGA, the webinar will cover the best practices in dealing with and responding to regulatory agencies in response to a mine emergency. It will discuss how to maintain control over the situation from both an internal management standpoint and a legal standpoint. Additionally, it will explain how to conduct your own internal investigation into the emergency, including finding out what happened and responding to employee questions and concerns. U.S. Concrete acquires mining aggregate reserves
U.S. Concrete acquired the Wantage Stone reserves, a site development quarry in Hamburg, N.J. The quarry includes an 80-acre land parcel, as well as mining rights to an additional 77 acres of land. "The acquisition of these aggregate assets is directly aligned with our strategic objectives to expand our construction material operations and strengthen our vertically integrated capabilities," says U.S. Concrete President and CEO William Sandbrook. The Wantage reserves will continue to enhance its ability to service the Northern New Jersey and New York metropolitan markets with a combined 19 million tons of permitted reserves and a further 19 million tons of unpermitted, yet additional reserves. BKT hires head of OE sales
BKT Tires, the Akron, Ohio, subsidiary of Balkrishna Industries, hired Mike Connor as its head of OE sales. Connor has more than 25 years of experience in the off-highway tire and wheel industry. His previous work experience includes serving as general manager of Mefro Wheels USA and president/COO of Redco Wheel, located in Pennsylvania. “Mike brings extensive expertise and vision, which will aid in creating additional sales and developing our OE partnerships,” says Rajiv Poddar, joint managing director of Balkrishna Industries in India. “We strongly feel he is an important asset to our company.” Connor will be working out of the company’s Akron office. Haver & Boecker opens service center in Ontario
Haver & Boecker, formerly W.S. Tyler, opened a new service center – the Haver Service Facility – in St. Catharines, Ontario, near the company’s headquarters. According to the company, the service center will offer complete rebuilds, machine monitoring and servicing, and related services designed to maximize uptime for customers. In addition, Haver & Boecker partnered with aggregate and mining producers to create service programs personalized to their needs. The program covers aspects such as vibration analysis, preventative maintenance, safety and complete rebuilds. The pulse vibration analysis program monitors the speed, stroke and amplitude of any vibrating screen to evaluate the relationship between feed material, screen media and vibrating screen. The asset management program ensures businesses have OEM-quality equipment. Additionally, guaranteed OEM parts are available at service locations throughout North America, and certified Haver Service technicians perform preventative maintenance. SME accepting scholarship applications for 2016
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) is now accepting applications for the 2016 scholarship season through Oct. 15. SME, the SME Foundation and the Woman's Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (WAAIME) awarded 157 scholarships totaling $372,500 to student members attending U.S. and international colleges and universities last year, according to SME. “A key mission of SME is to foster interest in and facilitate the study of mining and mineral-related courses at institutions of higher learning by providing scholarships to qualified students,” says David Kanagy, SME's executive director. “We are proud to be able to provide these educational opportunities to the future leaders of the global mining community.” The SME divisions and affiliations offering scholarships include coal and energy; environmental; industrial minerals and aggregates; mineral and metallurgical processing; mining and exploration; WAAIME; and the SME Foundation. AEM and MSHA renew alliance to promote safety
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) signed an agreement renewing their alliance with one goal in mind: to promote the safe use and operation of mining equipment. Through the alliance, AEM and MSHA will work cooperatively to provide mine industry personnel with information, guidance and access to training materials to emphasize the use and operation of equipment. “AEM recognizes the benefits of joint efforts to create a safer work environment,” says AEM President Dennis Slater. “Our two organizations working together contribute to improved safe use of mobile equipment by those employed in the nation’s mining and milling operations.” Past projects undertaken by AEM and MSHA include a program and training materials concerning use of seat restraints; contributions to the MSHA “rules to live by” program; and targeted training supplements focused on the safe use of a number of machine forms. Dodge Momentum Index improves in August
The Dodge Momentum Index, a monthly measure of the first report for nonresidential building projects in planning, increased to 128.3 in August, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. That's a 2.8 percent increase from its July reading of 124.8. According to Dodge Data & Analytics, the August gain is attributed to an increase in new plans for commercial buildings, up 8.4 percent from July. Despite this, the institutional building sector in July fell 5.2 percent following July’s surge. Ten projects entered planning in August with a value exceeding $100 million. Eight of these were commercial projects and two were institutional projects. In the commercial building sector, a $500 million mixed-use project in Santa Clara, Calif., entered planning, as well as a $400 million hotel at the JFK International Airport in New York, and a $350 million warehouse in Orlando, Fla. In the institutional building sector, a $400 million hospital in Phoenix and a $150 million assisted living facility in Seattle entered planning.
