Follow a few golden rules this winter to avoid unplanned downtime on your conveyors.

1. Get ahead of maintenance. Wet or frosty weather can expediate the development of rust on rollers, bearings and scrapers. This can lead to seized rollers, conveyor belt wear and tracking issues.

Routine checks of these components and cleaning debris and material buildup will help to prevent rust from developing.

2. Conveyor storage. During particularly cold spells, consider relaxing the belt tension and folding the conveyor, if possible, when not in use. Also, make sure to relax the skirting rubber to prevent it from seizing onto the belt. Be sure to avoid belt compression or sharp folds that can cause surface crazing to the belt, as well.

If you are running a mechanically fastened belt, consider removing the belt altogether and storing it inside. Any spare belts should be stored indoors during particularly cold weather.

3. Start slow. Cold weather can cause a conveyor belt to become stiff and less elastic, so take care when starting your machine. Running the conveyor slow and empty for a few minutes will reduce tracking issues and prevent damage.
