Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.9 million tons in May, an increase of 33.9 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA).
May’s loadings were also above the month’s five-year average by 6 percent.
Loadings from U.S. quarries in May increased to 3.2 million tons – up 42.2 percent compared to May 2023. Shipments from Canadian quarries in May totaled 734,489 tons for an increase of 7.2 percent.
On the year, the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 6.5 million tons – an increase of 30.9 percent compared to a year ago. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries total 5.3 million tons, an increase of 33.7 percent. Shipments from Ontario quarries are up 19.8 percent on the year to 1.2 million tons.
