Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 4.2 million tons in July, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports.
The tonnage is up 4.7 percent versus the total compiled in July 2022. Additionally, LCA says the 4.2 million tons shipped on the Great Lakes is above July’s five-year average by 6.6 percent.
Analysis
Loadings from U.S. quarries in July totaled 3.4 million tons – an increase of 11.4 percent versus July 2022. Shipments from Canadian quarries were down 17.3 percent to 770,365 tons.
Through seven months of 2023, LCA says the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 12.2 million tons. That total is down 10.7 percent versus the mark of a year ago.
Also, 2023 loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries are up to 9.8 million tons through seven months – a decrease of 8.1 percent. Shipments from Ontario quarries total nearly 2.4 million tons for a decrease of 20 percent versus 2022.
