The estimated annual output of construction aggregate produced for consumption in 2019 was 2.47 billion metric tons, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). That’s an increase of 5 percent compared with 2018.
In the fourth quarter of 2019, an estimated 591 million metric tons of total construction aggregate were produced and shipped for consumption. That estimate represents a slight decrease compared with the fourth quarter of 2018.
USGS’s estimates are based on information reported to the agency in a quarterly sample survey of aggregate producers across the United States.
Also in the fourth quarter, the estimated production for consumption of construction aggregate increased in five of USGS’s nine geographic divisions. Quarterly production for consumption increased in 17 of the 39 states for which production estimates of construction aggregate were made.
The five leading aggregate-producing states in the fourth quarter were Texas, California, Ohio, Florida and Missouri. Their combined total production for consumption was 179 million metric tons. That’s 30 percent of the U.S. total.
For 2019 as a whole, the estimated total annual production for consumption of construction aggregate increased in 33 of 50 states. The five leading states were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Their combined total annual output was 740 million metric tons.
Crushed stone
The estimated annual output of crushed stone produced for consumption in 2019 was 1.51 billion metric tons – an increase of 6 percent compared with 2018.
An estimated 360 million metric tons of crushed stone, meanwhile, were produced and shipped for consumption in the fourth quarter of 2019. That’s a slight decrease compared with the same period of 2018.
Fourth-quarter crushed stone production increased in five of USGS’s nine geographic divisions. Production for consumption increased in 23 of the 45 states for which production estimates were made.
Sand and gravel
In sand and gravel, the estimated 2019 annual output was 960 million metric tons – a slight increase compared with 2018.
The estimated output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the fourth quarter last year was 230 million metric tons. That estimate is a slight decrease compared with the same period of 2018.
Fourth-quarter sand and gravel production increased in only three of USGS’s nine geographic divisions. Production for consumption increased in 19 of the 42 states for which production estimates of construction sand and gravel were made.
