Great Lakes limestone trade down in May 2017

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.6 million tons in May, a 5.4 percent decrease compared to May 2016, reports the Lake Carriers’ Association.

According to the association, May’s loadings were slightly above the month’s five-year average.

Loadings from U.S. quarries in May 2017 totaled 2.9 million tons, a 4.2 percent decrease compared to May 2016. Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 683,000 tons, a 9.3 percent decrease from May of last year.

In addition, year-to-date, the Great Lakes’ limestone trade stands at 5.3 million tons, which is a 12.3 percent decrease compared to May 2016. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries total 4.3 million tons, an 11.4 percent decrease; and shipments form Ontario quarries total 980,000 tons, a 16.3 percent decrease.

The Lake Carriers’ Association represents 13 American companies that operate 49 U.S. flag vessels on the Great Lakes and carries the raw materials that drive the nation’s economy.
