National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Light Mountain Transit

light mountain transitThe National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is featuring a Light Mountain Transit with Burt Solar Attachments circa 1876-1886.

A transit is a special instrument that measures angles on horizontal and vertical planes with a moveable telescope, which can flip over to allow back-sighting and doubling of angles. The Burt Solar Attachment allowed the surveyor to find a location using the horizon and the position of the sun. Very few transits were equipped with this attachment. This rare transit manufactured by W. & L.E. Gurley of Troy, New York, now Gurley Precision Instruments, is on view at the museum in Leadville, CO.
